Dutch director, Monique Wagemakers, studied dance pedagogy and music at the Brabants Conservatorium in Tilburg. In 2006 she directed an internationally acclaimed production of Madama Butterfly, for the Staatsoper Stuttgart, and working together with dramaturge Prof. Klaus Zehelein, she was nominated for “Director of the Year" by Opernwelt magazine. For her many staging’s with the Nationale Reisopera, including Peter Grimes, Fidelio, La Traviata, I due Foscari and Un ballo in maschera, she was rewarded the ‘Friends-award’ (Vriendenprijs). Until 1993 Monique Wagemakers was associated with the Netherlands Opera, Amsterdam, where she made her directorial debut in 1983 withMadama Butterfly, followed by Rigoletto, and more recently, a new and successful production of Lucia di Lammermoor at the Muziektheater in Amsterdam. Since then she has created productions in the Netherlands and abroad: including Carmen (2008) for the Staatsoper in Stuttgart,Ariadne auf Naxos (2009) and Il barbiere di Siviglia (2010) for the National Theater Mannheim and Rigoletto(2009) for Teatro Real in Madrid. Further past productions range from Der Fliegende Höllander (Edmonton Opera);Carmen (Vancouver Opera); Rigoletto and Don Giovanni (Opera Zuid);Tosca (Utrechts Concert); La voix humaine (Holland Symphonia); to Brand’s Machinist Hopkins and Robert Heppener’s Een Ziel van Hout(Holland Festival). Monique Wagemakers was associate director and choreographer for Strauss’s Intermezzo and Arabella at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera with director John Cox She also choreographed many productions for the Netherlands Opera including Don Giovanni, La Traviata,Salome, Rigoletto, Rodelinda, La Vie Parisienne and Carmen. Long associated with Harry Kupfer, reviving many of his productions for the Nederlandse Opera as well as those of Götz Friedrich, Richard Jones, Herbert Wernicke, David Pountney and Dario Fo. From 1995 until 2009 Monique Wagemakers has taught drama at The Utrecht School of the Arts. In the Netherlands La Traviata, Verdi will be her next production. Future new productions in Germany will be: Lulu, Alban Berg und Tristan und Isolde, Wagner. |
